About

Emergency Medicine has a unique position in a healthcare system because of its involvement in pre-hospital programs for the transport of patients to and between hospitals. Emergency Medicine serves as a gateway to the health care system.

History

Academic Emergency Medicine began at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1978. The division gained national prominence and earned full departmental status in 1995. Since the start, we continue to live our mission – improving acute care while creating and sharing the knowledge to do this even better.
