The Center for Emergency Medicine of Western Pennsylvania, founded in 1978 as a research and educational resource, has established itself as a focal point for emergency medicine research, education, and patient care. The center is the residency's "home base".

Occupying two floors of an office building adjacent to the University campus, it houses not only the residency program but also faculty offices, a Department of Education with extensive classroom space, and a full-time research director. Among the center's many programs are paramedic training and certification; continuing education for EMTs, paramedics and other allied emergency medical personnel; emergency medicine electives and clerkships for University of Pittsburgh medical students; and sponsorship of basic and applied research in emergency care. Now in its third decade of service to medical professionals, the Center continues to serve as a focal point of innovation and growth for emergency medicine at the local, regional, and national levels.
